“AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, but only if it is developed and implemented responsibly. At Duke Health, we are committed to setting the standard for trustworthy AI in medicine—ensuring that every algorithm enhances patient care, empowers clinicians, and upholds the highest ethical standards. Through the Evaluation & Governance program, we are shaping a future where AI is not just a tool, but a reliable partner in advancing human health.” — Michael Pencina,  PhD, chief data scientist at Duke Health and vice dean for data science at Duke University School of Medicine

Empowering Safe, Fair, and Effective AI in Healthcare

Duke’s Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support (ABCDS) Oversight, a collaboration between the Duke School of Medicine and the Duke University Health System, answers the call for effective governance of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions used in clinical care and operations. The ABCDS Oversight Committee maintains an inventory of AI solutions and performs evaluation to ensure adherence to Duke Health’s standards for patient safety, equity, and effectiveness. By introducing evaluation checkpoints throughout the AI solution lifecycle — from development or procurement through deployment and ongoing monitoring — ABCDS Oversight promotes quality, transparency, and accountability alongside technological innovation.
