Matthew Elmore, ThD, is the AI Ethics and Evaluation Specialist for the Duke Health AI Evaluation & Governance (E&G) Program. Dr. Elmore advances the ethical, evaluative, and oversight components of AI-driven clinical decision tools in this role. He also leads and contributes to research, writing, training, and consultation efforts focused on AI evaluation and governance. Prior to the Coalition of Health AI's (CHAI) transition into a nonprofit organization, he played a key role in shaping its early work and direction.

Dr. Elmore joined Duke following completion of his doctorate in bioethics at Duke Divinity School, where his research examined Western notions of free will and the ethics of informed consent. His professional path is “two-legged,” rooted in both the liberal arts and applied health sciences. Trained as an EMT, he began his career caring for patients in the emergency department and burn unit of his hometown hospital in Michigan. He later collaborated in clinical research, partnering with a cardiologist to develop robotic innovations for cardiac procedures. Throughout his career, Dr. Elmore pursued studies in philosophy, theology, and literature, disciplines that now inform his work at the intersection of healthcare, ethics, and the humanities.
