Our Flagship Initiative

ABCDS Oversight: Empowering Safe, Fair, and Effective AI in Healthcare

Checkpoints of design, selection, development, then testing, then demonstration, then deployment across the AI solutions lifecycle

Duke’s Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support (ABCDS) Oversight initiative, a collaboration between the Duke School of Medicine and the Duke University Health System, answers the call for effective governance and oversight of AI and other algorithmic solutions used in healthcare delivery. The ABCDS Oversight Committee maintains a registry and performs evaluation of algorithmic solutions to ensure adherence to Duke Health’s standards for patient safety and high-quality care. By introducing evaluation checkpoints throughout the AI solution lifecycle — from development or procurement through deployment and ongoing monitoring  the ABCDS Oversight initiative promotes transparency and accountability alongside impactful technological innovation.
