Duke Health AI Evaluation & Governance Program's Sophia Bessias and Matt Elmore recently gave a talk on AI Standards in Healthcare to K-12 science teachers and administrators in North Carolina as part of an offering provided by the North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research (NCABR) on November 28th. They discussed the varieties of algorithms used in healthcare along with some of the most salient ethical issues surrounding their use. Bessias, the evaluation lead for Duke Health’s Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support (ABCDS) program, discussed how AI is governed at Duke; Elmore, who serves as AI Ethics and Evaluation Specialist, discussed the ways Duke is contributing to the national standards conversation through the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI). Their presentation was followed by a lecture by AI Health’s managing director Shelley Rusincovitch on fostering learners in ethical and equitable health data science.
