Formation of Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) as a Nonprofit Leading Health AI Standards and Policy Advocacy

The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) is being established as a nonprofit organization tasked with overseeing a nationwide network of testing laboratories designed to evaluate artificial intelligence tools for healthcare applications. These laboratories will be set up at prestigious member institutions such as Duke, Mayo Clinic, Stanford, and others across the nation. The primary goal is to develop a certification and registration system for AI models, ensuring transparency in their performance details before widespread adoption. Originally a small group of individuals dedicating their time and effort to establish best practices and procedures for health AI, CHAI has evolved into the leading advocate for health AI standards and policy. With 1,240 organizational members representing health systems, life sciences, startups, payors, and patient advocacy organizations, CHAI has become a prominent voice in the field. A recent STAT News article underscores the significance of CHAI’s formation and assurance labs in realizing the Biden administration’s vision of ensuring that AI is fair, appropriate, valid, effective, and safe.
