The US National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has announced an initiative aimed at developing an Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct (AICC). This framework, which includes input from a steering committee comprising experts drawn from academia, industry, and other organizations, is intended to help the broader health AI community converge on shared principles and best practices that will enable trustworthy AI in healthcare and medical research. The NAM’s AICC complements efforts underway through the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), whose work is focused on technical and implementation issues affecting the use of AI in healthcare. In April of this year, CHAI publicly released a draft version of its Blueprint for Trustworthy AI Implementation Guidance and Assurance for Healthcare (V1.0), a living document that will evolve in tandem with the NAM AICC. Duke is an active participant in CHAI, with Duke Health’s Michael Pencina, PhD, and Nicoleta Economou, PhD, playing leadership roles in the coalition.
